No, we watch DCI videos in band every year, just like we watch Blast every year.

I'm still working on my goals for the trumpets. Should I have Greased Lightnin' and Summer Nights passed off first (August 22nd) or should it be the fight song first? And should I set the pass-off date earlier, or is it fine? And for the second and third pass-off date, does September 5th and 19th work? Right now I want the first two show tunes passed off by August 22nd, fight song by September 5th, and the last two show tunes by the 19th.

Greased Lightning and Summer Nights should be their priority. No one ever required us to pass off On Wisconsin, but we should anyways (at least on a later date). I think Mote's goal is for us to have 75% of our show completed by the time we get to the GA Dome, so whenever that is, we should have those 3 songs passed off. We should require the trumpets to pass off the respective music a week before the respective show, because knowing some of the rookies they might fail the first time and might have to try again, so we need to give them appropriate time. If you could post maybe the first 5 game dates, that'll help me get the pass off dates organized.

The scrimmage is August 15th. The GA Dome is the 23rd.... So I guess that means we'll have to have Greased Lightnin', Summer Nights, and Hand Jive passed off by the 15th. The week after the GA Dome is a bye week, and we have games September 5th, 12th, and 19th. And we play Woodstock the 26th, so we need to have everything done by then (just because of the rivalry). So you think I should set the dates earlier? How about August 13th: that's a Wednesday, so we can do it during sectionals.... wait, bad idea. We need sectionals. I guess It'll just have to be the 15th. And we need to have On Wisconsin passed off before the GA Dome game (not necessarily memorized, but to a point where it's presentable at the GA Dome). So that should probably also be passed off by the 15th.... I don't think that's going to happen. We might be able to get the first two show tunes passed off, and some might get Hand Jive, but I don't think we can get all of them done with and Hand Jive and On Wisconsin in two school weeks. Even with them in band, sectionals, and lessons.

In all my past years we passed off music during sectionals. We could have Geof take control of sectionals while everyone else passes off music to both of us.

Yeah, Geof is obviously going to end up being section leader, so he could use the practice. GAH! I just realized we (the trumpets) have been going to set four of Greased Lightnin' wrong! Watch closely: www.msconcepts.com/shows/movies/GREAS3.aviWhoever's on the end of our line in set three leads the follow the leader and we spiral! We've been breaking the line and following you to make a circle.

I think we can actually fix that during sectionals, since it's just a trumpet line, so it doesn't affect anyone else. So we can fix that at our first sectional, or this Tuesday and Thursday if we have sectional time.

In order for the plan to work with Geof doing sectionals, you and Geof will have to pass off the music right away because we need to get started with pass-offs pretty soon. So listen to the music like crazy this week and work on memorizing it with the style and tempo and everything. Try playing along with the music. It really helps. Like you said, marching band forces you to learn everything faster. So if you go through the music without stopping like you would during a marching show, you get better a lot faster. Plus, memorizing the notes while listening to it also helps memorize it, and it helps you develop perfect pitch, which always helps in band.

LOLOL TOMORROW I'M GOING TO GIVE THE TRUMPETS A POP QUIZ: NAME THREE DRUM CORPS FROM DRUM CORPS INTERNATIONAL (DCI). If, they've watched the videos I sent out, they have nine corps to pick from. Shouldn't be too hard if they've watched them.

Actually, three corps is too easy if all of them work together to come up with the names. Maybe five.

So, Anthony, you and Geof will have to decide who gets to pass off the music first. I'll pass you guys off the first two Wednesdays of school before sectionals, somewhere between 2:30 and 4 (2:30-2:45 if we're going to do basics like last year). So have at least Greased Lightnin' and Summer Nights ready by then, and have On Wisconsin playable, with or without music.

We'll just make them volunteer, and if no one does, we'll pick whoever looks least prepared > .

That's actually not a bad idea. If they're not prepared, having them attempt to pass it off earlier gives them a chance to find out what they're doing wrong, and then they have time to fix it. So we'll ask for volunteers first, and if nobody volunteers, we won't even say we're going to pick someone. We'll do it like Mr. Howard and just randomly choose someone without any warning. I think Larry thinks he knows it, so he'll probably volunteer just to get it over with. That's good because I think he's actually the farthest from being prepared, besides maybe Jonathan. So they'll be first, and we'll figure it out from there. And I think Geof should pass off the music before you, because then he can lead sectionals and I can take anyone who's already prepared the first week. And we can stay a little bit late and I'll pass you off. Because there probably aren't going to be very many people who are prepared the first week, so one person passing people off should be fine.

I could have passed everything off (except for Fire of Eternal Glory) last year. I had the show tunes memorized ever since we sight-read them in band. And I had Fire of Eternal Glory memorized the second day we had it. And I still have the fight song memorized from last year. But I don't have to pass the songs off, so it doesn't really matter that much.
