Agreed, despite heavy imbalance and lack of good stages. It will always have a special place in my heart.

I really liked the hyrule castle stage. And kirby was way too overpowered. But I mained him.

Pikachu all the way (although I'll admit, spammed Thunderbolt on Saffron City as my main tactic in free for alls). But we all change and grow.

Saffron City was awesome. Especially when Porygon came out of that thing and yelled out "CRAAPPY" xD

lol now that I think about it, side-b moves are way too overpowered in Smash N64.
Oh wait.

what was everyone's first character that they played? mine was pikachu, because i was totally in love with the pokemon series when smash first came out.

The very first character I tried was Pikachu (surprised I can still remember). My neighbor said Pikachu wasn't good, but I wanted to try him since I really liked pokemon. Once I tried him I realized he wasn't good (actually, I just didn't know how to play the game). Turns out Pikachu is the best character in the game, according to tiers. But I ended up maining Kirby since I thought his Up-throw was really powerful. Plus he had a good amount of jumps and his down-b rock was spammable.
It's surprising that this game was fun when we had no idea what we were doing, and yet is still even more enjoyable when we do know how to play.

It was almost 10 years ago I believe.. It's crazy how we grew up with this game.

My first character was Link. I had been playing Ocarina of Time, so I had to use him. I didn't play much, and as a result, it took me like a year to discover smash attacks. I had always wondered why I kept getting Smash-less...

haha nice. I believe I just spammed A moves when on the ground, and depended on throws for kills. I can't really remember.

I didn't know what taunts, tilts, or rolling was until Melee. Every time my sisters or I would taunt or roll, our faces would light up, the battle would stop, and we'd spend matches trying to figure out what happened. We bought the game used so we had no instruction manual.

wats a tilt?

|
Post by Anthony G on May 13, 2008 16:27:22 GMT -5
a tilt is when you press a direction on the analog stick and then hit A. Down tilt is the easiest because left/right tilt makes you walk and up tilt sometimes makes you jump. Marth's down tilt is one that is easy to recognize since it is noticable and a good move to utilize. His tilt is when he crouches and "pokes" his sword at you.
But I didn't really know what tilts were until about half a year ago. I just used them not really knowing what it was, but mainly spammed smash attacks. This is why I thought Mr. Game & Watch had so many moves because each tilt/smash attack/aerial have a different animation, whereas Marth uses his sword for all of his attacks.

Awesome. I only used smash attacks too. I barely used aerials, too.

The only aerial I used was Link's down aerial.

I would just use the aerial in the direction of my opponent if I ever left the ground.

Yeah me too. I would probably still be doing that stuff if it wasn't for smashboards/smashwiki, bringing my gamecube to school to learn some new stuff, and watching videos online. I think watching videos makes you a better a player since you learn the characters' metagames.

Very true, and to visually see what is happening helps tremendously. It is far better to learn with watching than "Do this, this, this..."

Yeah, but reading and watching is the best thing to do to increase your skill rather than trying to get better ignorantly. It's crazy how pros got so good though. They did it all by themselves

Wrong. You are wrong. The only times I researched tactics is when I wanted to know what SHFFLing and wave-dashing were. Other than that, I just develop my own strategies. As far as Brawl goes, I checked some character stats and abilities a little on the Smash Boards when it first came out, then just developed by own playing style again. I'm 100% natural, baby.
