I think Mote has been pushing it, but that's just what he's been saying, and he's been saying that for a while, lol.

I'm not sure, but, to me, it seems like Mr. Dunnavant supports band more than ROTC. And that's saying something since he doesn't really pay us any attention. to think, someone out there gets less attention/suport from dunavant than us.

It's not that he doesn't pay any attention to us. It's just that he has people he'd rather pay attention to more than us. But it is saying something.

Oh, yeah. Remember when Mr. Rice told us to do "five spirit reminders"? Well, if I say it, just so you know, Spirit Reminders are Spirit Laps and Reminders are push-ups. If Mr. Rice says it, you'll probably just have to figure out which one he means (5-10 reminders=5-10 push-ups, 1 reminder=1 lap)

I agree with everyone on marching band being substituted for PE, but that's not up to Dunnavant. That's the School Board's thing, and they've been debating it for years. If they ever do give it back to us again, it would be for the entire county, maybe the State. The beaureacracy is slowing things down.
On another note...no. Marching Band is essentially walking, with some laps and push-ups peppered in. It's motion, but it's not nearly as physical as you guys think. Think of it this way: if marching band was a real sport, why are a large abount of marchers obese? Like I told Estal20 in sectionals, marching band is light to medium legwork, and not much upper body (which depends on the instrument). For the record, he challenged me on that, so I proceeded to do 30 push-ups for him, and challenged him to do the same (Estal20's decline or my challenge = EPIC FAIL). Seriously, marching band is not as phsyical as Mr. Mote claims. He's full of it. Marching Band comes nowhere near the level of physical strain real sports put on you.

All you do in Personal fitness is run laps. Marching band is equal to or greater than running laps.

In marching band, you exercise control over your feet when you roll step and backwards march. You need leg strength to be able to constantly walk from heel to toe smoothly and to be able to walk on your toes for eight minutes for shows and at least fifteen minutes for parades. It takes more effort than you're willing to admit, Lucco. And if you have a trumpet or baritone (or flute for one hand), you need upper body strength to hold your instrument up at a ten-degree angle for the same length of time. Yes, we do run laps and do push-ups occasionally, and so does the gym class and ROTC, but it takes more strength and endurance, as well as lung capacity and cardiovascular endurance, to do marching band than almost any other sport.

People, you should probably play a sport before you go saying that marching band is more difficult than it really is. I played tennis for 7 years, I work out 4 times a week, and I run the days that I don't work out, and I can say with certainty that marching band doesn't take half the leg strength, endurance, and cardio that a real sport does. Running, for instance, takes way more cardiovascular endurance than marching band, and the same goes for biking. And as for arm strength...no. I did the weights, which weighed 10 pounds more than a baritone (which is more than enough to compensate for the fact that I didn't have to hold my instrument as high as brass players do), and it doesn't compare with the physical difficulty levels of football and baseball. Marching is still walking, even if it is a little more difficult than walking normally, it's not much. I'm not saying PE is difficult, because it's not, but marching band isn't either. I admit, marching band seems easier to me than a lot of people, but that doesn't change the fact that it isn't nearly as strenuous a physical activity as football, tennis, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, or just about any other sport (Except curling. What is the deal with curling anyways? You just slide rocks on ice...). Marching band is great, and I still think the school board should allow it to be substituted for PE, but it's no sport. It's more about dexterity than athleticism.

I did soccer for a few years, and Marching band is physically demanding. It's not just the lower body, the upper torso is stressed more by the heavier instruments (bass drums, tuba, etc.) Granted it's not quite as much as football of soccer, but it is physical activity that is more than you get in Personal Fitness.

I'd say it's the same, if not a little more than PE.

So if you agree that it's the same as PE, then why shouldn't it count as a PE credit?
No one here is saying that Marching Band is as physically demanding as a "real" sport.

I do think it should be a PE credit. I've said that 2 or 3 times in the thread.

I'm arguing sports over marching band because some people believe Mote when he says that marching band is just as much of a sport, if not more of a sport, than football, biking, running, and just about everything else that is far more strenuous than marching. THE TRUTH MUST BE HEARD.

No, it is a sport. But to be said it's as strenuous as football is ridiculous. Have you ever seen the movie "We are the Titans"? Marching Band is not like that.
