So after today, I think most people know who Randy is. He is friends with Robbie and Rob, he is a freshman, and he looks kinda funny. After school today, a few kids did 1v1 with him and he 2-stocked everyone. This is pretty good considering that when I fight you guys, I win with (usually) 1 stock.
Randy's Super Smash Bros Background:
After talking to Randy a bit today, I learned some of his Melee background.
-Never owned Melee
-Got good by attending local tournaments
-he came in 1st place in 6 of 8 tournaments
-He came in second at a tournament and lost to a guy that 4-stocked him
Now on to the point of this thread: how to beat Randy. I beat him once out of 3 matches, and it was a really close match. The first time (yesterday) I played as Link. If you think about it, Link is pretty much Samus with a sword. Link and Samus have projectiles, an extended grab, powerful attacks, and a really good recovery.
I thought Link would be a good match-up, considering I main him. But no, he predicted my thoughts, shielded all of Link's most powerful moves, mind gamed me into falling into his traps, and just, owned me. He ended up winning by two stocks. I wasn't expecting him to be good, considering Robbie said he could beat him. I guess Link's attacks were too slow to be effective against Samus.
Today after school, I used Marth. I did a lot better, but he still beat me by 2 lives
Marth's counter was effective, but my offensive lacked against his. He obviously has fought Marths in tournaments before because he seemed to know the basic Marth combos and was able to escape them.
After I lost that match, I decided I would use Falco, since I guess he would be my third main that would be able to stand a chance. He was not expecting my Falco to be at the level it was and I killed him when I was only at 24%. After that, he adapted to my Falco play style and was able to come back to get a kill. It was a pretty even match and by the time we were at our last stock, we were at around the same percent of 120-130. It was really close. I ended up mind gaming him by doing a poorly timed upsmash and he directional air-dodged right in front of me where he died from a forward smash.
I believe I could have done better when I used Link and Marth. It's just my problem is, when I fight someone good for the first time, I can't think clearly at all. Hopefully you all know that if you want to win against a decent person you want to mindgame as much as possible and not necessarly throw out all your most powerful moves *cough* tuba justin *cough*. So if you can't think clearly, you can't mind game properly, you can't predict properly, and you just suck. By my third match with Falco, I was pretty calm and was able to think clearly again. He could probably still beat me if I was using Link and maybe Marth, but I think I would do better.
Now, here's Randy's weakness: he only plays as Samus. I don't know if he has any other characters, but considering he doesn't have the game he couldn't have had time to get good with anyone else. Now you may be wondering how this little fact will help you beat Randy because he owns perfectly fine by using Samus alone. This is how: Samus has a terrible aerial game. They made it worse in Brawl just in case you're wondering. If you pick a character like Sheik, Fox, Marth, Falco, or Jigglypuff (all really good at putting characters in the air, and keeping them there), and you keep Randy in the air, you will do fine. Samus has a powerful ground game, and the only useful aerial attacks are Samus's neutral aerial (kick) and Samus's down aerial (spike). Randy never used Samus's spike, maybe he'll pull it out if he sees the opportunity, but I haven't seen him do it on anyone.
Randy knows this weakness, and he will try at all costs to get to the ground. Don't use your most powerful aerials until you juggle him enough for him to be around 100%. That way if he does get to the ground, you can rely on your ground attacks or your aerial attacks.
Randy will also make good use of the directional airdodge, so turn this into a disadvantage for him. Mindgame into making him do it so you can easily hit him with a smash attack.
Also, just watch his playstyle while he is versing you or anyone else. He really has only one playstyle, so just watch when it is common for him to use Samus's shoop da whoop or missles.
